Crazy busy and the necessity of the word NO
The life of a family of 7 is busy enough without adding homeschool, farm and remodeling to the mix. Being a working mom adds a little bit of EXTRA to my life. Thank goodness for summer vacation and the time it gives me to catch up and accomplish things that I dream about. Still, things can get crazy busy around here and I find myself dragging myself out the door for things that I really should have said no to.
I don't always find it easy to say no. Sometimes it's out of obligation and other times it's because I don't feel strong enough to say no. Often, I succumb to the manipulation of others...you know, guilt trips, fast talking and circle talking-things I am becoming increasingly aware of and am working to arm myself against.
This week, NO is necessary. We have already had a busy week of play dates, family visits and house projects. I just can't do another thing between now and a very busy weekend. So, my answer for the rest of the week is NO. Homeschool (we go year round), farm work, soccer and preparing for a huge event this weekend; these are the things that take precedence this week, and I am determined to protect those things with sheer will if necessary.
Of course there are some things that just can't be pushed aside. Animals still must be fed and watered. Milking still has to be done. The kids still need quality time with mom and dad. Our oldest who is out on his own still needs a drive time phone call with mom (I lie....mom needs it more than he does!) These things eat into the day and mean that other things like party prep have major time limits and space. Still, the no isn't always easy.
In his book, The Pathology of Innocence, J.S. Wolfe said, "Those who get angry when you set a boundary are the ones you need to set boundaries for." This is such a great reminder that you can't manage the response other people have to the word no. So, say the no! Say it loud when necessary and don't apologize for it. Those who can't accept it need it more than you do.
Proverbs 4:23. "Above all else, guard your heart."
